Symposium Convening Soon in New York City, Austen
and Byron: Together at Last.
The Byron Society of America and the Jane Austen Society of North
America will jointly host the symposium, Austen
and Byron: Together at Last. The symposium will take place on
03 May 2008 at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Speakers
include BSA Board Members Jonathan Gross (DePaul University) and
Peter W. Graham (Virginia Tech). To register, view

Byron Society of America Joins College English Association
The Byron Society of America is now an Affiliate Organization of
the College English Association. The College English Association
welcomes submissions for presentations at the 2009 meeting of the
association in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on the theme of Design.
The conference recently convened in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The
Byron Society of America sponsored a conference-wide beverage break
to celebrate our new connection to CEA. At the conference, new student
member Justine McGhee (University of Rochester) presented a paper
entitled 'Torturing Nature': Devastation and
Sublimity in 'Alastor' and The Last Man. Robin Hammerman (Stevens
Institute of Technology), CEA Board Member and BSA Director of Membership
and Academic Services, delivered a paper entitled Byron's
Gangster Passages: Don Juan at Shooter's Hill. Long-time BSA
member and CEA Past President Ann Hawkins (Texas Tech University)
moderated the panel entitled, Textual History, Pedagogy,
and Practice and delivered
the paper, Teaching Textual Histories. The CEA 19th Century
British Literature Division Chair, Robin Hammerman, encourages members
of the Byron Society to become speakers or special panel chairs at

Boston Athenaeum Presents a Book Talk by Lord Kenneth Baker
Boston area Byronists are invited to attend Lord Kenneth Baker's
book talk on George III: A Life in Caricature, which will be held
at the Boston Athenaeum on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets

Lord Baker is the author of a number of books, including various
anthologies of poetry and George IV: A Life
in Caricature.
Member Ray Stevens Speaks at Southeast Conference
on Christianity and Literature
Long-time Society member Ray Stevens spoke recently about Byron and
Conrad at the Southeast Conference on Christianity and Literature.
The conference took place at Wingate University in Monroe, North
Carolina. Professor Stevens kindly distributed information about
the Byron Society of America to conference attendees. If you are
speaking at a conference and would like to spread the word about
our Society, contact membership@byronsociety.org to request a package
of informational material.
Looking Ahead: BSA at MLA
The Byron Society of America, an Allied Organization of the Modern
Language Association, will offer two panels at the 2008 MLA annual
convention in San Francisco. BSA member Tom Mole (McGill University)
and BSA Board Member, Peter W. Graham (Virginia Tech) will preside.
The BSA will shortly invite members to view a detailed copy of both
programs through the BSA website.
