Byron Society of America

Jane Austen
DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS WOMAN?

Yes, she is Jane Austen, author extraordinaire. Why is her picture featured in a Byron Society email blast? Therein lies the tale:

The Byron Society of America and the Jane Austen Society of North America will jointly present a full day symposium on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Union Theological Seminary, New York City:

Austen & Byron: Together at Last

Did these two stars in the literary firmament of the early nineteenth century have anything in common besides the age in which they lived? What were the similarities, if any, and (clear) differences in their responses to the tumultuous events and cultural influences of Europe —and Britain— in transition? Can we identify significant literary linkages and/or biographical connections between two such disparate personalities? How have their respective literary reputations fared over the past two centuries? Which of their works are taught today, and how?

Speakers including Peter Graham, Jonathan Gross, and Rachel Brownstein will explore these and other intriguing issues which, along with some special “entertainments,” will help us refresh our affection for our favorite author and further our acquaintance with one of his most notable contemporaries.
